The elegant simplicity of knit/purl texture in this shawl creates a subtle design that resembles the end of an arrow.

This pattern is suitable for a beginner and can be adapted to accommodate greater or smaller amounts of yarn. It looks just as nice in a gradient or a yarn with long color repeats as it does in a solid, semisolid, or slightly variegated yarn. It’s also a great pattern to use with handspun.

This pattern uses the following skills and stitches:

  • provisional cast on and picking up stitches along a garter edge (for the garter tab)
  • knit and purl when working flat
  • directional increases (m1L and m1R)

In addition to yarn and needles that give the recommended gauge, you will need four stitch markers and a yarn needle to weave in ends. Instructions are included in the pattern for how to adjust the size of your shawl if you have more or less yarn than specified. (Note: The sample shown in shades of blue and purple was lengthened according to these instructions.)
