THE INSPIRATION

Lace knitting is something I think every knitter aspires to, yet some are too afraid to give it a try. I’ll admit that knitting lace can be tricky sometimes, but it is ALWAYS beautiful. My Artemis Beanie design, inspired by the goddess of nature herself, features a lovely leaf lace that I just can’t take my eyes off of. You can create some amazing, unique masterpieces like this one once you get the hang of a few standard techniques that are much easier than they first appear to be! I hope this pattern helps to demystify lace knitting for you beginners out there, and that those of you who are more advanced will enjoy a quick and easy knit. :)

THE CONSTRUCTION

While the lace in this pattern is beautiful, it’s also quite practical! The lightweight, breathable fabric ensures that you stay cool no matter the weather, so it’s perfect to wear while enjoying the great outdoors. This project is knit from the bottom up and seamlessly in the round.

THE YARN

The yarn I chose for this project is Stonehedge Fibers Mill’s Shepherd’s Wool Worsted. Lace is traditionally knit in a thin, delicate yarn. However, that can be extremely time consuming and difficult to see, so I opted for a worsted weight yarn. This lovely merino wool is unbelievably soft and squishy, and it’s famous for helping to regulate body temperature: merino keeps you cool when it’s hot outside and warm when it’s freezing! It’s also very affordable, plus there are lots of gorgeous colors to choose from.

MATERIALS

• For the worsted weight (4) version, you will need approx. 100-115 yards (91-105 m)

• For the bulky weight (5) version, you will need approx. 85 - 100 yards (77-91 m)

• For the worsted weight version: US size 7 (4.5mm) 16” circular knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge) and double-pointed needles in the same size - optional

• For the bulky weight version: US size 10.5 (6.5 mm) 16” circular knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge) and double-pointed needles in the same size - optional

• Common notions, such as yarn needle, measuring tape, scissors, and at least 1 stitch marker.

MEASUREMENTS

Approx. 8” (20cm) tall and 16” (40cm) around at the brim - don’t worry, it’s knit with negative ease so it’s very stretchy!

GAUGE

For the worsted weight version: 26 sts x 32 rows = 4” (10 cm) in 1x1 ribbing

For the bulky weight version: 18 sts x 20 rows = 4” (10 cm) in 1x1 ribbing
