Captain Arthur Hastings is Poirot’s loyal friend and accompanies him on many of his cases. He has a “genius for stating the obvious,” and his scrupulous and romantic nature make him a very likeable character. Since he represents the quintessential British gentleman, a genteel colorwork vest seemed like the perfect attire to outfit him for his sleuthing expeditions across the British countryside.

This straightforward yet sophisticated-looking colorwork vest features the all-over classic stranded colorwork pattern on the body only, eliminating the need for steeking.

CONSTRUCTION:

This garment is worked seamlessly from the bottom up, featuring a simple colorwork pattern all over the body (only two colors are worked at a time). The vest is worked in the round to the underarms, then the front and the back are worked flat separately. The shoulders are joined using a three-needle-bind off, then stitches are picked up at the neckline and armholes to work a ribbed edging.

Casting on, knitting, purling, decreasing, knitting in the round, working a stranded colorwork pattern in the round following a chart, working a three-needle bind off, picking up stitches, binding off.

YARN REQUIREMENTS:

- Main Color: Approximately 140 (160, 180, 200 // 225, 250, 275, 300, 325) yds or 128 (146, 165, 183 // 206, 229, 251, 274, 297) m of sport weight yarn

- Contrasting Color 1: Approximately 50 (55, 60, 65 // 70, 80, 90, 100, 110) yds or 46 (50, 55, 59 // 64, 73, 82, 91, 100) m of sport weight yarn

- Contrasting Color 2: Approximately 55 (60, 65, 70 // 75, 85, 95, 105, 115) yds or 50 (55, 59, 64 // 69, 78, 87, 96, 105) m of sport weight yarn

- Constrasting Color 3: Approximately 15 (18, 20, 23 // 25, 28, 30, 33, 35) yds or 14 (16, 18, 21 // 23, 26, 27, 30, 32) m of sport weight yarn

NEEDLES:

• US 5 or 3.75 mm diameter circular needle (or size needed to match stockinette stitch gauge). Length: 16 inches or 40 cm for sizes 3mo to 12mo ; 24 inches or 60 cm for sizes 18mo and up

• US 6 or 4 mm diameter circular needle (or size needed to match recommended colorwork pattern gauge) of the same length as above

• US 3 or 3.25 mm diameter circular needle (or 2 sizes smaller than needle used for stockinette) of the same length as above for bottom ribbing

• matching double-pointed needles for armhole and neckline ribbing

NOTIONS:

GAUGE:

23 sts x 32 rounds = 4 inches or 10cm in stockinette stitch in the round after blocking using smaller circular needle
