Simple knitting pattern for a sweater for children with nice details and fit. The sweater is knitted from the top down. You start by casting on stitches at the neck and knit back and forth while increasing on each side, to get a nice fit over the shoulders. When the back piece is finished, knit the front pieces by knitting up stitches from the back piece. The front and back pieces are knitted together after the sleeve opening is finished. The sleeves are knitted from the top down, you knit up stitches in the sleeve opening on the body.
FIT
Range of motion (positive ease) is 15-20 cm from the chest measurement/upper width for a loose fit. If the child measures, for example, 63 cm around the widest point of the upper body, size 4-5 years or 6-7 years will fit best (range of motion of 17 or 21 cm). Choose a size according to the upper width and adjust the length of the sleeves and body to the child. Also measure the upper width of a sweater the child already has and likes the fit of.
Note – correct measurements require that the knitting tension is adhered to.
Yarn quantity info: If you want to knit in one color, 5 (5) 6 (6) 7 (8) 9 balls of the desired color will suffice. You will also need only 1 ball of two colors in size 9 months - 4-5 years, and 2 balls of the two colors you use most.
You will also need a needle for thread attachment, scissors, and measuring tape.
