Baby Hedgehogs
If you want to make a complete hedgehog family, check out my curious hedgehog and shy hedgehog patterns.
These babies are only about 3” long but they have realistic details like ears and even teeny little legs on their spine-free bellies. They would be great for stocking fillers, party favors or last minute gifts, and the perfect way to use up scraps of eyelash yarn and plain DK or worsted yarn.
Size
About 7.5cm (3”) long if made with DK or worsted yarn for the body
Tools and materials
~ plain DK or worsted weight yarn, and an eyelash yarn
~ crochet hooks: 3mm/C or 3.5mm/E for the plain yarn parts (or the size that gives you a tight, no-gaps fabric); 5mm/H for the eyelash yarn
~ black plastic eyes: because the head is so small, it is easier to use sew-on or glue-on eyes than safety eyes. Size: 5mm for DK yarn, 6mm for worsted
~ black sewing thread and needle, or glue, to attach the eyes
~ fiberfill stuffing
~ sewing or embroidery thread in the color of the eyelash yarn, and a matching needle
~ stitch markers, pair of scissors, yarn needle
~ optionally, if using safety eyes, wire cutters to shorten the eye stems
Difficulty
This pattern is suitable for intermediate to advanced level crocheters who are confident with basic stitches (sl st, sc, dc) and frequently used amigurumi techniques (magic ring, invisible decrease, working in BLO).
While the pattern itself is not difficult, working with eyelash yarns can be quite challenging. I tried to make it as stress free as possible: stuffing is safely enclosed in the plain yarn body, and after the first round, you won’t even need to count stitches while you work with the fuzzy yarn.
The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology (UK/Aus equivalents provided). It contains many in-progress photos, but also includes a text-only appendix for easy printing, if you prefer working from a printed pattern but want to save ink and paper.
Finished amigurumi made from this pattern are yours to keep or gift or sell, I only ask you to credit me as the designer in case you decide to sell them.
