The sweet little “Baby’s Breath” preemie beanie pattern features a gorgeous floral design on the crown, with cluster stitches leading down to a delicate scalloped brim. These hats were specially designed using flat textures that are beautiful, but won’t irritate little heads. Crochet them with a soft fingering weight sock yarn of your choice.

Techniques Used: working in back bar of single crochet, working in BLO, spike stitches, clusters, Elizabeth Stitches, shell stitches

Materials Needed:
55-95 yards #1 sock weight yarn. Here are some you can try:
-Loops & Threads Woolike (Acrylic) note: this yarn is discontinued but you may have some in your stash that you need to use up, or you can use the YarnSub site to find a close match.
-Knit Picks Comfy Fingering weight yarn (Cotton),
-Hand-dyed Superwash merino wool/nylon blend sock yarn, either undyed, or in the color of your choice.
2mm steel hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge
Yarn needle
Scissors
Stitch markers (optional)

Stitches Used:
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
Sc2tog = single crochet 2 together: invisible decrease: insert hook through front loop of next 2 sts, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2.

Additional Terms:
Elizabeth Stitch: insert hook into st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, insert hook into same st, draw up a loop, yo pull through all 4 loops on hook. These stitches should be as tall as a sc stitch.
Back bar of sc = look at the back of the stitch and locate the short bar that runs horizontal. Work all designated stitches for the round into this bar. This is a different location than the back loop!
BLO = back loop only
3dc cluster = YO, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, YO, draw through 2 loops (1st stitch of cluster made), YO, insert hook into same st, pull up a loop, YO draw through 2 loops (2nd st of cluster made), YO, insert hook into same st, pull up a loop, YO draw through 2 loops (3rd st of cluster made), YO, draw through all loops on hook.

8” head circumference (3-4 lb) preemie hat: 4” wide, by 3 ¼“ tall
10” head circumference (4-5 lb) preemie hat: 5” wide, by 3 ¾” tall
12” head circumference (5-6 lb) preemie/newborn hat: 6” wide by 4 ¾“ tall

Gauge:
2” across after round 6 with #1 yarn and 2mm hook
Additional Notes:
-ch-1, or ch-2 at beginning of a round do not count as a stitch unless otherwise indicated.
-Please check with your local NICU before beginning this project. You will want to make sure that you are using the right kind of yarn, and crocheting the beanie sizes that they have the most need of.
