Backfield Hat
I designed this pattern with the colorwork beginner knitter in mind. The familiarity of knitting a hat keeps things simple, allowing you to adjust your focus to learning this new skill. Follow my clear and colorful chart, row by row, gaining confidence as you progress.
This hat is one size, designed to fit a range of kids and adults comfortably. If you’d like to adjust the size, simply use a smaller or larger needle.
If you’re new to colorwork I suggest knitting a test swatch. You may notice that your gauge tightens as you switch from regular knitting to stranded knitting. One way to remedy this is to change to a larger needle when working your stranded knitting section of the pattern.
I used the beautiful Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok Worsted yarn in the pattern, but there are many other yarns to chose from. I do advise that you use a natural non-superwash wool yarn. The tooth and body of a non-superwash yarn will help your stitches grab each other, creating a more solid and uniform fabric.
Yarn used in pattern:
Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok Worsted
100% Fine Highland Wool
123 yards/50 grams
One 50 gram skein Storm Cloud
5 grams each of Spring Ice, Quartz Crystal, Golden Meadow, Red Rock.
Happy Knitting!
Melissa
