Baillie is a stunning shawl, worked with a dramatic Lily of the Valley lace pattern edged with a simple border. Its intricate decorative surface was inspired in part by the ‘white room’ of The Blackwell – an Arts and Crafts house designed by M H Baillie Scott at the turn of the nineteenth century and located here in the Lake District overlooking Lake Coniston. The white room features glorious architectural details such as clusters of flower buds closely resembling the Lily of the Valley patterning used in Baillie.
Four sizes are included in the pattern with everything for the perfect Edwardian outfit from an expansive wedding style shawl to a neat cravat-esque necktie achievable from this single pattern. Whilst not for those new to lace knitting, this pattern offers an interesting challenge to the more seasoned lace knitter.
Baillie is knitted using Susan Crawford Melissa, a fine 1 ply Laceweight yarn, spun from a luxurious blend of baby alpaca, silk and cashmere. The yarn is perfect for this intricate design and is incredibly soft when directly against the skin. The impressive meterage of Melissa means that even the largest version of Baillie requires only 100 grams of this stunning yarn. The samples are shown here in shades Burnt Sienna (first size) and Bianca (fourth size).
Baillie is worked from the bottom up, starting with a knitted cast-on using two strands of yarn on the larger needles to give a defined edge. The smaller needles are then used for the rest of the shawl, commencing with a simple border and transition section, and then the main lily of the valley lace pattern. Finally, the remaining live edge stitches are grafted together to complete the shawl.
The pattern includes four sizes and includes comprehensive written instructions and a schematic. Lace can be worked from either charts or written instructions.
