Balaclava
The Balaklava pattern is a versatile and timeless design suitable for all ages. It can be customized to fit any size by adjusting the needle size or yarn thickness. This multi-functional piece can be worn as a snood, hat, or hood when removed from around the neck.
Suggested yarn & needle size:
When choosing your yarn, consider any merino wool variety that specifies a needle size between 4.5 and 5. For added texture, you have the option to incorporate a strand of alpaca yarn.
When selecting yarn for knitting a child’s balaclava, it’s advisable to choose a blend with a higher proportion of merino and a lower amount of regular wool to ensure a comfortable, itch-free experience. Additionally, yarns made from materials like mink, baby alpaca, cashmere, or angora rabbit can be excellent alternatives for a soft and cozy finish.
To achieve the desired outcome, it is advisable to utilize a slightly smaller needle size of 3.5 to 4mm, deviating from the manufacturer’s recommendation.
The Balaklava in the photo was created using 3.5mm needles and a combination of TEHETE Cashmere yarn (2 plies) and Drops Alpaca yarn (1 ply).
Gauge:
19 stitches by 30 rows per 10 cm / 4” in stockinette stitch – needle size 3.5 mm
Finished measurements:
The balaclava has a length of 36 cm (79 stitches) and a width of 23 cm (69 rows) for both the front and back when placed on a flat surface.
This pattern is designed for individuals with a head circumference ranging from 51 to 54 cm.
The size of the balaclava can be adjusted by varying the yarn thickness and needle size.
For the adult size, it is recommended to add 10 more stitches to the cast-on row to make the neckline longer.
Head sizes:
- Child (6-10 years): 48.2-52 cm (19 - 20.5 inches) - Pre-Teen, Teen (11-15 years): 52-53 cm (20.5 - 21 inches) - Adult: 52-54 cm (20.5 - 21.5 inches)
