Basic Basket Weave Socks
Sometimes you just need a nice easy sock with some textural interest. A sock that looks great and has some serious stretching capabilities. A sock that has a few easy instructions but nothing earth shatteringly complicated. A sock that is not too embellished and fancy-schmancy that could be knit for a guy or a gal. A sock you don’t need to block because of its glorious texture.
Well…this is that sock!
The basket weave pattern is a tried and true traditional knitting pattern that is perfect for beginners. No fancy sequences, or difficult to execute stitches. Just a relaxing pattern of knit and purl stitches that is easy to memorize and quick to work up. It’s a pattern that is appropriate for everyone and is particularly suited for those of us with wide feet, thick ankles and/or high insteps, as this stitch pattern is super stretchy. In fact, folks with slender feet and ankles should size down.
The pattern is given in both chart and written formats. Four sizes are offered, the pictured sock was knit in the large size which fit a women’s size 10 and a men’s 11 perfectly.
These socks are knit cuff down with a traditional heel flap and side gussets. This pattern is appropriate for a beginner who has made at least one pair of socks. Expert knitters will find the pattern interesting as well (good TV knitting!), and it should be a quick knit for them.
Yarn recommendations: I recommend solid colored or only lightly tonal or speckled yarns or the textural pattern will not be evident.
