Half of Cornwall Calling, Beachcomber is a very adaptable shawl. A plain, stocking stitch, body evolves into bands of shell-like lace patterning and is finished off with a very simple lace border. A scattering of beads highlight the lace. The pattern offers the opportunity to make either a two-colour shawl or, alternatively, a one colour version. Using two skeins of yarn, two different colours, same base, Beachcomber is a simple yet effective shawl. The original, the two-colour version, was worked using two skeins of DyeDianaDye SilkenSea fingering. This pattern includes instructions for a one colour version and suggestions for alternative versions using additional colours. Beachcomber is perfect for using the remaining yarn from your Tinsmith shawl!

Simple to knit, simple to wear, this crescent shaped shawl has many combinations each giving you a shawl you can make your own!

REQUIREMENTS
Size Options: As written – 82” (210cm) wide, 23” (58cm) deep, though the shawl is easily enlarged or reduced. Measurements taken using DyeDianaDye SeaSilk Fingering. Note that measurements will differ depending on yarn, tension, blocking etc and these are therefore given as a guide only.
Yarn: Two skeins of DyeDianaDye SeaSilk Fingering (400m/100g) each skein a different colour for the two-colour version. A one colour/one skein shawl was achieved with six repeats of Chart 2 using Dream in Colour Jilly 402m/100g and eight repeats using The Fibre Co Meadow 500m/100g. Other Suggested Yarns: The Uncommon Thread BFL Singles, Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, Qing Fibre Merino Singles Fingering, La Bien Aimee Merino Singles, Life in the Long Grass Singles, Posh Yarns Sylvia, Gretchen, Bronwyn or Ophelia Fingering, The Fibre Co Meadow and Lichtfaden Silk Merino Fingering though almost any fingering weight yarn would work beautifully.
Circular Needles: 3.5mm (US4), 3.75mm (US5), 4mm (US 6) and 5mm (US 8) about 1m in length or needles to create a pleasing fabric – your fabric should have good drape.
You will also need: stitch markers, just under 275 beads (as written), needle (for weaving in ends), blocking pins and mats, cro-tat needle or small crochet hook for applying beads as all beads are applied to the stitch as you knit. Do not string beads onto the yarn prior to working.
Gauge: Gauge is not overly important as this is a shawl. It is better to knit a swatch to ensure that you are happy with your tension and the drape of your fabric remembering that a looser gauge will result in additional yardage requirements. However, the gauge achieved was 20 sts to 4” after blocking – measurement taken over stocking stitch using 3.75mm (US 5) needles.
You will find it useful to print your pattern on a colour printer or colour aspects of the pattern in coloured pencils.

The pattern is both fully written and charted with bead placement clearly indicated throughout.
