Beam Me Up Shawl
The scene: a couple parked at the top of a hill in a 1950’s convertible on a perfect starry night, as shown by a very obviously painted backdrop. Just as the young man slides his arm around his date, they both look up in the sky and see an object hovering in the distance. Is that a shooting star? No, it’s coming closer--IT’S A FLYING SAUCER! It’s clearly some toy hanging from a string filmed in perspective, but it’s unmistakable.
Greetings, Earthlings! The Beam Me Up shawl, shaped to look like one of those unidentified flying objects, is a tribute to every low-budget sci-fi cinematic experience ever made from The Day the Earth Stood Still to Star Trek: The Original Series. While most crescent shaped shawls are blocked to smooth out the top “bump”, this one is left in place to create a shawl collar, lending to it’s alien spaceship shape. Built with alternating sections of garter stripes and two-color brioche, this reversible shawl is sure to provide an unearthly knitting experience.
Pattern Notes:
- Shawl is worked top down in a crescent shape, increasing by 4 stitches on every wrong side row, 2 stitches at each end before an I-cord edge.
- The “bump” at the top is NOT blocked out in order to create a built in shawl collar for extra cozy wear.
Finished Measurements:
Length: 24”/61 cm
Width/Wingspan: 78”/198 cm
Video tutorials included for getting started, two-color brioche, and Kitchener Stitch!
