Bella and the Waves evolved over the last year and is very much a celebraon of Sco!sh
kni!ng pa%erns and stories from the fishing community. Those of you who have read the
Gansey Kni!ng Sourcebook will recognise the wave pa%ern. The pa%ern was discovered in a
cake n in the kitchen of our friend Anji Hancock, whose grannie was Isabella, or Bella, a
herring quine and great gansey kni%er. The notes in the n were hers and of the family. Sheila,
co-author of the book, kni%ed from the notes recognising the kni!ng language of a by gone
age and discovered this wonderful “Wave’ pa%ern. We haven’t seen it anywhere else in our
exploraons of Ganseys. I have used the pa%ern in stranded colour work in the Cairngorm
design as it reminds me of the work of the Italian fashion house Missoni, but I always felt we
should honour Bella by using it in a special piece named a4er her. I loved the peaks and troughs
in the design and it seemed to lend itself to partnering with classic Argyll pa%erning, usually
seen in colour intarsia kni!ng but here in a single colour. The Argyll diamond is achieved by
the use of texture, using reverse stocking stch and normal stocking stch. This design is also
perfect to play with using intarsia and even over embroidery. I do love to play and this pa%ern
is perfect.
It is a loose and generous fit with some swing and various lengths and possible colourways. I
have used a special openwork ma%ress stch in the finishing of the side splits and at the neck
of the garment and there are 2 or 3 opons for how you can wear the neck. I used 2 lovely
contrasts to make a summer version and a winter version, but you could work in a single colour too.
