“Jane’s stay in Kent that September was a period of great happiness. She took pleasure in playing with her newest baby nephew, George.” —David Nokes, Jane Austen: A Life

“Mrs. Weston, with her baby on her knee, indulging in such reflections as these, was one of the happiest women in the world. If any thing could increase her delight, it was perceiving that the baby would soon have outgrown its first set of caps.” —Jane Austen, Emma

No Regency-era layette would be complete without a bonnet. This sweet little cap was inspired by an extant hand-embroidered infant’s bonnet from the Regency era. It is knitted at a very fine gauge, but is so small that it won’t take too long to work up. The delicate lacy patterns bestow an heirloom quality—as certainly befits every baby.
