MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
The Bempton Mittens were designed for my first-ever Purl &Jane Retreat in October 2018. I can’t quite remember what came first – the Bempton Jumper or the Bempton Mittens! They were both created that year, so it’s a bit of a mystery.

I usually design a garment first and then create accessories in the same pattern. I love doing this because it gives knitters a chance to try out a new stitch technique on a smaller project before committing to a full garment. It’s a great way to build confidence and get familiar with the rhythm of the repeats – and once you do, you’ll see just how simple and enjoyable they are!

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat from the bottom up in one piece with one side seam and one thumb seam.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, increasing, one simple cable, picking up stitches, cast off. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.

YARN
One 100g hank of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran – Undyed
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/182yds per 100g

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
5mm.

NOTIONS
Cable needle.
Two stitch holders.

GAUGE (tension)
18 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm square over cable pattern when slightly stretched. I obtained this gauge with 5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
To fit adult hand.
