There’s a line in the film The Holiday that always make my husband and me chuckle – when the little girls asks what Cameron Diaz’s lipstick colour is called and then whisper back the answer, ‘Berry kiss!’

It felt like an appropriate name for the cowl since I designed it in this gorgeous shade of red for Valentine’s Day with a gloriously berry-like stitch texture.

And while this is a rather straightforward and beginner-friendly pattern, it’s all the little details that work together to make this cowl such a delight to wear.

The side split provides a wonderful fit, causing the cowl to snug comfortably over your shoulders, neck and decolletage.

The stand-out seam transforms what could otherwise appear as a defect into an elegant feature.

The taller length than other cowls allows you to wear it right up to your nose and chin or to fold it down for extra layers of warmth.

And the DK-weight yarn means that the drape of the fabric is soft and supple for comfort and to keep out the wind, but doesn’t crumple right down to nothing around the base of your neck.

You’ll find this to be a very meditative make with a simple 1-row repeat for the main texture, worked in turned rows.

And there is a photo tutorial and stitch guide to help make any new techniques as straightforward as possible to learn.
