Betty Beret
There are two options for making the Betty - one is for a slouchy beret and the other is for a classic beanie.
There are alternatives given for starting both shapes of hat.
One is using a crochet hook, making a magic circle and increasing over three rounds to 27 chains before picking up stitches with a circular needle or dpns and continuing with increases. This gives a ‘pointy end’. US terminology is used. This method avoids the very fiddly start with dpns.
The other starts with dpns or circulars with magic loop and gives a flat crown.
After choosing your 4 ply (fingering) weight main colour, you can play with colours using scraps of yarn from your stash and making as many or as few colourwork feather and fan sections as you want.
