Betty...Betty Grable
There are very few people in history remembered for a photo. There are even fewer whose photos have been said to have changed history. Betty Grable was one such person. Born Elizabeth Ruth Grable on December 18, 1916, Betty had a tumultuous start to her Hollywood life. With a mother who was dead set on making her a star, Betty studied ballet and tap dancing. At the young age of 13 her mother lied about Betty’s age and landed her daughter several minor rolls in some well known movies. However, the public didn’t seem to take notice.
In 1940 Betty married Jackie Coogan (who’s success boosted hers) but that relationship ended in 1940. Then a little movie called, ‘Down Argentine Way’, the public took notice. They became enchanted with the blond haired, blue eyed, beauty.
During WWII Betty’s success skyrocketed. After her iconic pin-up photo, which was voted one of the top 100 photos that changed the world, she became unsurprisingly famous among the troops. Betty became the highest paid star earning, $300, 000 a year (that is almost 5 million with inflation!) and 20th Century Fox insured her legs (yes…those thick luscious gams!) for a million dollars!
Betty’s life was cut short at the age of 56. She passed from lung cancer. We will always remember her beauty, her grace, and her stardom. She was a true star.
Pattern Information
Every lady needs a vest to make her summer wardrobe complete. That one piece that is lightweight, airy, and perfect for throwing over your bathing suit for a day at the beach or a tank top to take the chill off while watching the fireworks. Betty…Betty Grable is a patriotic little number that was inspired by the great pin-up model, Betty Grable! It is worked in one large piece from the bottom up. The Double Trellis Stitch is as simple as can be and after a good blocking, opens up beautifully. A simple scallop trim finishes this piece off!
