Bijou Tee
Bijou is a just simple tee, with a little surprise construction at back.
I’m in love with this shoulder/upper back detail, which I had been sketching for a while, waiting for the right yarn and motif combo. It’s a bit different, but easy to wear. The simple front is a great balance to the strong lines of the shoulder and seam detail, and it’s just perfect with a tee or tank underneath. Knit from the bottom up in the round to armholes, the knitting goes fast and the lace is easy to follow, with strong lines and a bit of texture. And the fingering-weight yarn has a drape here that I’m in love with.
This tee also has the added bonus of being totally reversible! I didn’t think of that until after the photo shoot, so see test knitter sweaters, or the Tee’s Cousin, The Bijou Sweater - for images showing it worn with the lace at front.
(As I describe the construction below, I’ll assume it’s being worn with lace at back just to keep my comments consistent…)
Bijou is knit in the round to armholes, where the front and back are separated and knit flat to end. The lace is continued partway up the back, then finished and bound off lower than usual. The front is worked upwards and shaped at the neckline, then shoulders are continued so they can be brought downwards and seamed onto the top edge of the back panel. A bit of shaping ensures a nice fit , and a welt detail under the seam of the back panel makes for a beautifully distinct edge.
Bijou’s loose shape and short sleeves make it an easy piece for indoor wear, a warmer climate, or the transition from hot to cold weather, and I love how the fabric looks in this gorgeous fingering wool from Barrett Wool Co!
Notes are included in the pattern for altering the length or width of the body, as well as for modifying both sleeves and armholes.
