Bingpot Beanie
Kit out the entire family in a slouchy, comfy, and colourful hat that’s way easier to knit than it looks. The Bingpot Beanie’s coloured panel may look swish, but it only uses one colour per round – making it no harder than a basic stripe.
It uses DK weight yarn - so it knits up fast – and with each coloured stripe being just two rounds wide, it’s a brilliant way to use up scrap yarn. Go for the entire rainbow or keep it a bit calmer with a classic two-tone contrast. The Bingpot beanie works with whatever’s in your stash.
But it’s not just fun to knit. It’s also super cosy and comfy to wear. Bingpot comes in 6 sizes, from 0-6m up to large adult. And you can pick from two looks - a slightly slouchy version, or a super slouchy, depending on the look you’re after.
The photos show the large adult hat in the super slouchy fit, and the child (4-10ys) hat in the slightly slouchy fit.
Its stretchy ribbed brim and roomy fit make it super-comfy for even the fussiest of toddlers. Believe me. My family have extensively tested it.
Key information
The Bingpot Beanie is knitted in the round using DK yarn. It can be worked on either DPNs or circular needles, depending on what you prefer (see key information for some notes on using circular needles with this pattern).
The coloured panel uses mosaic knitting, which is a fancy name for some very simple colourwork. It uses only one colour per row, so is no more complex than knitting a basic stripe but gives a fantastic finish.
The pattern is sized for 6 sizes ranging from 0-6m old baby to large adult. Instructions are written as “0-6m, (6-12m, toddler, child) teen/small adult, large adult”, so make sure you’re looking at the right numbers for the size you’re knitting. All sizes use the same simple four-stitch repeat for the colourwork section, which is both written out and charted.
Suggested yarn: This pattern will work with most DK weight yarns. The samples use Eden Cottage Yarns Milburn DK (112m/122yds per 50g).
See the table below for yarn requirements.

Suggested needles (and notions): 3.5mm (US 4) and 4mm (US 6) needles suitable for knitting in the round – or size needed to match gauge. You can use DPNs or circular needles – if using circular needles, it’d be easiest to use a long (100cm/40in) needle for the baby/toddler/child sizes and work in magic loop, but the adult sizes could be worked on a 40cm (16in) needle.
Gauge: 24sts and 32 rows to 10cm (4in), measured over coloured panel, and 21sts and 27 rows to 10cm (4in) measured over stocking stitch (note: the pattern adjusts the stitch count between the panel and stocking stitch to allow for this difference).
Picking a size:
The hat is designed to be worn with 5-10cm (2-4in) of negative ease. Pick the size based on actual head measurements.
