Blazer Stripe
Bands of knitted herringbone stitch on a stockinette field give a nod to the woven twill fabric of a classic sport coat. Knit up in Haven, this fitted cap and matching cowl make a luxuriously cozy set.
Both the cowl and the cap are worked in the round. The nature of herringbone stitch requires it to be knit using a significantly larger needle to match the gauge of stockinette stitch, so needle sizes change regularly throughout the work.
Sizes
Cowl: One size
Cap: Adult Small (Adult Medium, Adult Large)
Finished Dimensions
Cowl: approx. 23.5” circumference at bottom, 22.25” circumference at top, 9.25” high

Skill Level

Yarn
Shibui Knits Haven (80% Extra Fine Merino, 20% Cashmere. 160 yds / 50g per skein)
For Cowl: Approx. 240 yds / 2 skeins of Haven
For Cap: Approx. 150 (165, 180) yds / 1 (2, 2) skeins of Haven
For full set of Cowl and one Cap of any size: 3 skeins of Haven
Needles
For Cowl: US 6 (4.0 mm) 24” circular needles, US 10.5 (6.5 mm) 24” circular needles
For Cap: US 6 (4.0 mm) 16” circular needles and DPNs (or longer circular needle for magic loop) for crown shaping, US 10.5 (6.5 mm) 16” circular needles, a second set of US 6 (4.0 mm) 16” circular needles to join the folded brim.
A note on the needle requirements for the cap: the second set of US 6 circular needles is used to hold the live stitches from the provisional cast on while you join them to the main body of the work. If you do not have a second set in the same size, you can also use a slightly smaller size or circular needles with a longer cord length. If you prefer a snug fit for your brim, you may wish to use a needle one size smaller for the ribbing portion.
Gauge
24.5 sts and 29 rows = 4”/10cm in a Herringbone and Stockinette sequence stated in the pattern, after blocking.
Note: The Herringbone stitches in this pattern will pull in the stockinette stitches to a tighter gauge. If you work a plain St st swatch, your st gauge should be closer to 21 sts and 33 rows = 4”/10cm; choose appropriate needle to achieve this gauge.
Tools
Stitch marker for BOR, tapestry needle, pins and blocking boards for wet blocking.
For cap: waste yarn for provisional cast on, four additional stitch markers.
Skills Required
Long tail cast on for cowl, provisional cast on for cap, working in the round, decreasing.
