Blizzy
A frosty friend to warm anyone’s heart! I have always loved snowmen and wanted to create a cute snowy buddy for someone special. This one was inspired by a character in the lovable Disney show, Doc McStuffins.
Blizzy is knitted seamlessly from the bottom up, with cute raglan decreases to accentuate the shaping. His head is knitted separately and sewn on top of the body.
The arms are picked up from held stitches at the sides of the body.
Lastly, you add some fun details, like his scarf, hat and buttons!
This is an intermediate pattern, although I think an adventurous beginner could do it. You need to be comfortable making increases and decreases, as well and a bit of sewing piece together and embroidery (for face details).
Finished Size
Blizzy stands 10” / 25.5 cm tall, not including his hat; body circumference is 21 ½” / 54.5 cm at the widest point
Yarn
Araucania Azapa – 45% merino wool/35% alpaca/15% silk/10% rayon, 140 yds / 128 m per 3.53 oz / 100 g; 2 skeins
or approx 170 yds / 155 m of a worsted weight yarn
~ Approx 30 yds / 25 m of black worsted weight yarn (for hat)
~ Approx 15 yds / 14 m each of light & dark blue yarn for scarf
~ Small amounts of orange yarn (for nose) & green yarn (for hat trim)
Needles
Size US 5 / 3.75 mm dpns – or preferred method for working small circumferences in the round
(Note on needle size: Gauge is not important for this toy - however, you want to choose a needle at least a couple of sizes smaller than recommended for your chosen yarn, to get a more tightly knitted fabric. This will keep the stuffing from showing through and help with overall durability of your snowman!)
Gauge
20 sts + 30 rows = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch in the round
Notions
~ Polyester fiberfill stuffing ~ 2 ½” buttons ~ tapestry needle ~ embroidery thread (or you may use yarn) for stitching mouth and eyes ~small length of thin wire (optional – for shaping top of hat)
