Bloom!
THIS IS A MYSTERY SOCK KNIT ALONG!
Come join the conversation in my group Watch Datenshi Design Finish your BLOOM! socks and post them in the FO thread by July 1st to qualify for a prize! This page will be updated with the final pattern and pattern information at the end of the KAL.
All the information you need is posted here on this page to decide on colors, yarns, and size.
INSPIRATION:
I love unusual flower names. Before I even knew I was going to have a second child, Hyacinth was on my shortlist had he been born a girl. Not only was it a fun sounding word name with cute nickname potental (Cindy!) I think that Hyacinths in bloom are beautiful and inspirational. Such a fun rush of blossoms on such a stricking plant! With that in mind, for this sock Hyacinth blossoms are the primary visual inspiration, however I’ve taken a non-traditional approach to representing them. This sock will guide you through some fun colorwork, lace, cable, and texture techniques to create a feeling of spring blooms.
HOW THIS MKAL IS GOING TO WORK:
I will be releasing one clue per week using the following schedule:
CLUE 1: May 15
CLUE 2: May 22
CLUE 3: May 29
CLUE 4: June 5
The KAL will continue until three weeks after the final clue is released, with a final pattern release date of July 1st. The pattern will remain a mystery. The final, complete pattern will be released after the KAL is done.
You will receive automatic pattern updates as each clue is released, and a copy of the final pattern at the end of the KAL in its final format.
SIZING INFORMATION:
This sock will be written in two lengths (over-the-knee and mid-calf) and in three sizes (S,M,L). CO # for the longer length will be80, 88, 96 and will decrease to 64,72,80 as you work the long leg. This is to accommodate the width of the calf. The shorter size will have the traditional 64,72,80 CO. You should CO the size appropriate for your individual sizing based on gauge.
WHEN PICKING YOUR COLORS and YARNS:
Choose 3 fun colors that make you think of spring and growing things. Pick a yarn base that works well with color work, lace and cables. This sock has a little bit of everything, so you really want to use a yarn that will help the project shine!
I went with :
Cephalopod Yarns Skinny Bugga Fingering / 4 ply
424 yards /113 grams
80% Merino/10% Cashmere/
10% Nylon
The colors I chose (shown on the right) were
MC: Purple Soldier Fly (purple)
CC: Light Emerald Moth (green)
AC: Other Mother (pale pink)
As you chose your own colors, think of your MC as your anchor color. There will be a little bit of it all over your sock, at the start, in the middle, and at the end. Make sure its a good color, one that you really love. Semi-solid/solid colors are recommended.
Your CC should really complement your MC. Its your color partner. They need to work together well. It will also be the dominant color for a large part of the sock so make sure you really like working with it but don’t be afraid of adding a bit of punch!
Your AC should be the palest or most neutral of your colors. It shouldn’t compete for attention with the other two colors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pick something fun!
