“Blunt the knives
Bend the forks
Smash the bottles
And burn the corks

Chip the glasses
And crack the plates
That’s what Bilbo Baggins hates!”
— J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

But, Bilbo probably does not hate these socks! The cables here are sharply defined and criss-cross over the entire surface of the sock, sometimes thinner over thicker, sometimes the opposite. I wanted to recreate both the chaos and the order of Dwarfish dishwashing skills.

Skill-level: Intermediate— there are many cables and specific chart reading will be necessary.
Materials: 375-440 yards (340-400m) of sock yarn. The socks pictured are a size Large and used right around 400 yards of Barking Dog Yarns Achilles Sock in the color Poppy.
Needles: US1 (2.25mm) sock needles. Pattern is written for both DPNs and Magic Loop. Use the needle size that gives you the best fabric and closest gauge.
Tools: Cable needle(s), if necessary; tape measure, scissors, tapestry needle.
Gauge: 34 stitches and 48 rounds per 4 inches or 10 cm in stockinette stitch.
Sizing: Small (Medium, Large, Extra-large) sizes measure approximately 8(9,10,11) inches or 20.3(22.8,25.4,28) cm. around the cuff. Leg height, ankle depth, and foot length are all adjustable to size and preference.
Note on sizing: Despite the extensive cabling, this pattern remains relatively elastic. Please choose the size that most closely fits your desired measurements.
