This cardigan sweater uses traditional Fair Isle techniques. The sweater is knit in the round using stranded knitting. The armholes, cardigan, and neck use steeks to enable the pattern to proceed in the round.

The Knitter’s Magazine version (An American in Shetland) varies slightly from the one in the book (Brae).

According to the author:

“Although this sweater is primarily red and white, it doesn’t look monochromatic because of the opposition of warm and cool reds: in the small patterns, warm salmon is paired with cold red; in the large patterns, cool pink is paired with warm red. These colors seem to push each other apart, so the reds tend to look purple or orange. The white is not actually white, but undyed natural wool, which is a pale beige, with a softer effect than pure white. All the patterns are different, though the larger ones are variations on two alternating themes: radiating star/rosettes and curve-bordered diamonds.”
