Inspired by Bramante’s amazing 1505 helical staircase that is found in the Pio Clementine Museum in the Vatican, the Bramante cowl uses a double helix of stitches to create a simple spiral striped cowl.

This is the first pattern in Something New to Learn About Helical Knitting, and is the perfect introduction to helical knitting. The pattern allows you to entirely focus on mastering your first helical knit.

Yarn
Something to Knit With Aran (70% highland wool, 30% superfine alpaca; 82m [89yds] per 50g skein)
Yarn A: Mist 1 x 50g skein
Yarn B: Sky 1 x 50g skein

Needles and Notions
1 set 4.5mm [US 7] circular needles, 40cm [16in] long, or needle size required to match tension
One 5mm [US 8] knitting needle, or one size larger than the size needed to match tension
Stitch markers
Waste yarn (smooth cotton is ideal)

Tension
19 sts and 25 rounds to 10cm [4in] over striped stocking stitch worked in the round
