Bridgewater begins as a simple garter stitch square, worked on the bias with increases and decreases to add a touch of asymmetrical interest to the finished piece. The central square is framed with horseshoe lace, a pattern that originated in the Shetland Islands in the 19th century, worked circularly from stitches picked up around the perimeter. The shawl is completed with a traditional knitted-on edging reminiscent of water droplets, worked perpendicularly and joined to the live stitches as you go. This elegantly simple accessory makes a beautiful heirloom baby gift or a timeless addition to any wardrobe.
Construction
The shawl begins with a central square worked flat on the bias, with the first half of the square shaped with increases and the second half of the square shaped with decreases. Stitches for the outer frame are picked up around the outside of the central square and worked outwards. The lace edging is worked back and forth and joined to the live shawl stitches as it progresses.
