Brighton is a lightweight summer top that can be worn on cooler evenings over a t-shirt and jeans, or a sundress, or make the length a little longer and even wear it as a beach cover-up. The garment is knit from the top down with raglan sleeve shaping, and has an empire waist. The skirt is knit onto the bodice back and forth to form horizontal stripes.

This project was designed to work with singles-ply yarns for the skirt portion to create biasing stripes. If you choose to rework the design using commercial yarn, look for a lightweight, drapey, heavy fingering weight to sportweight yarn. A balanced plied yarn (which you’ll typically find with commercial yarns) will not yield the pretty little points at the hem edge, but you can still work the remainder of the sweater as written.

Because the bodice is a surplice or wrap top, there is some flexibility in sizing. When choosing a size to knit, select the size closest to your actual bust measurement. If that measurement falls between two sizes, choose the smaller one.
