Brit is “the minute yellow substance upon which the Right Whale largely feeds.” Brit was inspired by Melville’s description of a pod of Right Whales feeding by straining the brit from the water through the filtering plates in their mouths, their tails emerging and cutting a path through the sea. Just as Melville uses the subject of brit to contrast the sea and land, the colors I’ve chosen for the fingered and fingerless samples invoke the depth and darkness of the sea and the warmth and light of the land, respectively, for how can one choose a color to represent such a dichotomy?

As Melville writes, “…consider them both, the sea and the land; and do you not find a strange analogy to something in yourself?”

The pattern includes instructions for both fingerless and fingered gloves.
