Brooktondale Cowl
The Brooktondale Cowl was designed to coordinate with one of my other patterns, the Brooktondale Hat. Both designs use a doubled quilted lattice pattern, formed by strategically slipping stitches and later lifting them up behind the working row. The resulting garments are extra squishy and warm thanks to the slipped stitch pattern. The texture works well with tonal or variegated yarn, but solids and heathered colors would show off the stitches well, too.
I lived in the small town of Brooktondale for two years, in a large barn that had been converted to apartments. My favorite memories from my time in Brooktondale were those crisp fall mornings where I enjoyed tea on my porch, fished at the old mill, or made my way to Brookton’s Market for a delicious treat. When I saw the “Sunset” colorway of Malabrigo worsted, it immediately brought to mind all things fall: changing leaves, pumpkins, apple cider, and those gorgeous autumn sunsets. I always enjoy unpacking my clothes and accessories seasonally and can’t wait to show off hand knits as soon as the weather turns.
The cowl features simple ribbed edges that flows into a textured doubled quilted lattice stitch. The doubled quilted lattice stitch is achieved by slipping stitches with yarn in front, knitting subsequent rows, and then lifting the loose strands behind the working stitch. There are two full pages of step-by-step photos and directions for completing these stitches. The cowl is offered in two sizes in this pattern, but it is easily adjustable to fit your yarn requirements and preferences. Directions are given for the smaller size (with the larger size in parentheses and italicized).
