And now, for part 3 of the ongoing LOTR Fan Fiction saga -
“The Many Shawls of Primula Baggins”
-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-
Primula held another shawl up to the light. “Or perhaps I’ll wear Great Aunt Salvia’s shawl… She was wearing it on the Great Bucklebury Ferry Disaster, you know.” Primula confided to her husband.
“The… Ferry Disaster?” Drogo quaked. “I never heard anything about that…”
“Of course not - it was all hushed up. Aunt Salvia was leaving Buckland to move to Budgeford with her husband Gundabald Bolger, and the Ferry caught fire mid-stream. They suspect the Ferryman was smoking Old Toby and an ember from his pipe fell onto a hay bale. He jumped overboard with the poles, abandoning Aunt Salvia and Uncle Gundabald on the burning ferry in the middle of the Brandywine River - with no pole!”
“Scandalous!” Drogo exploded. “How could the authorities condone such dereliction of duty?”
“The Ferryman was a Hornblower,” Primula whispered, “and his family had the incident hushed up. The Hornblowers control all the pipe-weed trade, you know…”
Drogo nodded understandingly - hobbits do love their Old Toby… “But what happened?”
“Well, Aunt Salvia’s shawl was still freshly starched from the wedding, so she flung it towards the western shore, snagging a coiled docking rope - then the Boomerang Shawl circled back to her on the Ferry, pulling the rope behind it! She grabbed the rope and pulled the burning Ferry to the western shore, saving both their lives.”
“What a story!” Drogo said, shaking his head in disbelief. He wondered anew at the peculiar family he had married into.
“Yes, it was very sad for Aunt Salvia to have to leave her beloved home in Buckland after her marriage to Uncle Gundabald,” Primula sighed and wiped a teary eye, “but rather a thrilling boating experience as well, don’t you think? A memorable way to bid Buckland Farewell…”
