This top-down turtleneck is worked in the round, using a circular yoke shaping. This idea for this sweater definitely flowed directly from the yarn. Spincycle yarns have a unique texture and long-run colour changes that call out to be a design feature. Handspun yarn often has similar characteristics. While this sweater can easily be knit with any sport-weight yarn, if you are using a more standard commercial yarn as your contrast colour, consider adding a gradient or stripe effect to the colourwork.
The silhouette hearkens back to the late 1970s and is modeled here with zero ease. For a similar fit, choose a size no more than 2” larger than your actual bust, but remember that ease is a styling choice and you can make any size that pleases you. Do note that the placement of the colourwork can emphasize the bust, and may not be desired by all knitters.
This design includes waist shaping that is worked in the colourwork. It’s easy to skip it and work straight down from the sleeve split, but you’ll need to ignore the decreases in the underarm chart and your yardage requirements will be affected.
As there is no corresponding hip shaping to widen the silhouette, be cautious in adding length, or add hip shaping as you see fit.
