The sample shown used approximately 610 yds (558 m) total Color A: 70 yds (64 m), Color B: 120 yds (110 m), Color C: 200 yds (183 m), and Color D: 220 yds (202 m).

NEEDLE:

US #7 (4.5 mm) circular needle, 32” (80 cm) length, or any needle size to obtain gauge

SKILL LEVEL:

Intermediate: This pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. You will need to know how to cable and do an i-cord bind off, as well as following a chart and continuing a pattern beyond the chart itself.

Notes From the Designer:

I just love knitting top-down, triangle shawls — particularly ones that begin with a garter tab. I like how you begin with so few stitches and end with so many. As I was finishing up my work on the Rudaba pattern, I had the idea to take the single cable used in that shawl design and spread it over an entire shawl. Thus, Cable Wings was born.

• This is a top-down, triangle shawl with one increase at the beginning and end, and one on each side of the center spine. Therefore, with each RS row, you will increase your stitch count by 4 sts. A stitch marker on both sides of the center spine will denote the center stitch. Be sure to slip the markers after you complete the increase on the RS and as you come to them on the WS.
• The slipped stitches are slipped purlwise, and the markers should be slipped after the increase on the RS. On the WS, stitch markers are slipped as you come to them.
• The stitch for the center spine will be slipped purlwise.
• As you knit, you will notice that the (k4, p2) ridges cause the shawl to pull in towards the center, which almost makes it look like you’re knitting the shawl from the tip to the top. However, blocking will help achieve the top-down triangle shape you need.
• As you add stitches to each end and the center, you will continue to follow the pattern. It is generally a (k4, p2) stitch pattern with cables added alternately every 5 rows. In cable rows where there are not at least 4 sts left to work the cable, no cable will be added in that spot.
• Written instructions and a visual chart are included for the first 28 rows after the Set Up Rows. Working beyond the chart is as simple as continuing to work in pattern by increasing 4 sts every RS row and making a cable row every 5 rows alternately.
• There are 11 rows between each cable in a single column. The first set of cables occurs on every other 4 st column, and the second set of cables is worked in the columns the first set was not worked in. Thus, there is a cable row every 5 rows, but only every 11 rows per column.
