The yardage estimates above are for the cardigan alone. The Child’s Hat requires an additional 210 yards of ‘medium weight’ yarn.

The hat is a ‘potholder’ style (square) with two tassels, one on each of the two corners. It is knitted primarily in seed stitch, with a heart motif in the center front and a k2p2 ribbed brim.

The three sizes, corresponding chest circumferences (buttoned) and yarn amounts are:
Small (18-24 months, 27” around, 575 yards);
Medium (3-4 years old, 29” around, 730 yards); and
Large (5-6 years, 31” around, 820 yards).

Errata for the magazine edition cardigan is as follows (corrections bolded):
Eyelet buttonhole, Row 3:
“Work 2 sts, sl next st knitwise, k the 2 yo’s tog, leaving them on left hand needle, pass the sl st over st just made, k the yo’s tog with next st on needle.”

The Eyelet Buttonhole Row 3 instructions are worded slightly differently in the book (2nd ed.), for which the publisher website offers no explanation. It reads as follows (text bolded as shown):
“Row 3 Sl 1, k1, sl 1 knitwise, k the 2 yo’s tog, leaving them on LH needle (as shown), pass the sl st over st just made on RH needle, then k the yo’s tog with next st on LH needle, p1, sl 1, work to end.”

Cardigan Shaping Note: Most of the heart shaping is on odd-numbered rows of the 16-row chart (C), which is worked from right to left. But there is also shaping in Row 16, which is read from left to right.

The book also includes a teddy bear size (pullover) version of the Child’s Cardigan and Hat, with the same design motifs and same style hat. This pattern (by the same designer) is called ’Cables with Heart - Teddy Bear Sweater and Hat’. The two patterns are inexplicably separated in the book by the ’Cables with Heart - Child’s Pullover’ pattern.
