Cailleach Hat
*The beautiful textured lines of this hat were inspired by the celtic mythology theme that was behind the creation of this stunning, light reflecting blue yarn, “Beira”.
In Celtic Mythology, the Cailleach is the Goddess who created the Scottish mountains and lochs with her staff of power. The Cailleach Hat was therefore designed to illustrate the growing mountains, and the flowing waters that gave birth to the landscape of Scotland.
This beautiful, soft and cosy hat is knitted in the round from the bottom up, and only uses cleverly placed twisted stitches (no cables!) to achieve a lovely textured and decorative effect.
The pattern includes both written and charted instructions for convenience, as well as sizing options.*
Materials:
1 x 100g skein of Pitter Patter DK by Stewart Yarns (85% SW Merino, 15% nylon, approx. 200m / 218yds) in shade “Beira”
3.75mm set of double pointed needles, or 1 long circular needle if using Magic Loop technique
3.5mm set of double pointed needles, or 1 long circular needle if using Magic Loop technique
Stitch markers
Finished Size:
Approximately 20” circumference x 8” deep. Please note that the yarn is very stretchy, and the ribbed brim adds to the elasticity of the hat, which fits up to 24” very easily.
If you wish to make a slightly smaller circumference hat, keep to using the 3.5mm needle through the whole project. If you want to make a much smaller hat (18”), use 3.25mm and 3.5mm needles.
