Cake at Last!
This is the cover project on Stitchcraft: Fashions in Fair Isle, published in the 1940s while economy standards were still in force (rationing/austerity after WW2). At this time, in at least some patterns in the UK, larger needles combined with thinner yarn were recommended, to save wool. This created a very thin mesh, and today a thicker yarn and/or thinner needles can be substituted. This may not be the case with this pattern, but careful swatching is recommended.
It is a fairisle, v-necked twinset in two colours, with the long-sleeved cardigan covered in fairisle stripes, and the long or short-sleeved jumper having only two stripes of fairisle around the top, the rest being plain stockinet. Because the original was planned to have padded shoulders in line with contemporary fashion, the sleeves are slightly puffed to accommodate the padding.
The cardigan takes 8 oz main shade and 4 oz contrast yarn. The long-sleeved jumper takes 7 oz of main shade and 1 oz of contrast, and the short-sleeved jumper takes 6oz of main shade and 1 oz of contrast yarn. The cardigan takes nine buttons.
The pattern is written, with a small chart for the pattern-repeat of the flower band. The narrow-stripe band has a written pattern.
