Calaveras de Azúcar Hat
The motifs on this earflap hat were inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead sugar skulls from Latin cultures. This is not a hat suitable to be used for fancy dress or novelty costume wear (which is offensive to people from a Latin culture). I designed this to remember those many who have passed away in my family.
The hat has sugar skulls and floral two colour borders decorated with random jewel shades in Duplicate Stitch (also known as Swiss Darning). If desired, more embroidery could be included as surface decoration either using a tapestry needle or a crochet hook. The hat is finished with earflaps worked down from the brim with a small central motif and I-cord ties with pompons. A third pompon decorates the centre of the crown.*
