Caloroso
Caloroso warmth in Italian
Different from other shawls, Caloroso has no ends to weave in! This shawl is knit in the round and then steeked with a knotted fringe edge. Those pesky ends most knitters hate having to weave in (myself included!) simply become fringe in this shawl. A central twisted stitch panel and knitted lateral vikkel Estonian braids add some additional interest and fun techniques to learn while knitting.
Pattern Notes
This steeked triangular shawl features twisted stitch and knitted braids details.
The shawl is knit in the round from the tip up, increasing stitches on each side of the shawl every round to reach the wingspan.
Knitting in the round creates a cone shape that is then steeked to create the flat triangle.
The steek section is made up of 15 sts. The BOR divides the steek in half; 8 sts in the beginning of the round and 7 sts at the end of the round. The first stitch of every round is a purl stitch to mark it as the stitch that will be cut.
Once the shawl is steeked or cut along the column of purl sts in the steek st section, the remaining sts of the steek section are unraveled and then knotted to create a knotted fringe edge.
There are no ends to weave in.
The central panel has a twisted stitch pattern.
There are bands of an Estonian “Vikkel Braid” or a lateral braid worked at the same time as the central twisted stitch panel to break up the Stockinette sections.
The top edge of the shawl is finished with 1x1 rib.
