Carex Hat
INSPIRATION
Carex is part of the scientific name of sedges; the stitch pattern I developed for this hat reminds me of these plants’ geometric spikes and long, delicate stalks.
CONSTRUCTION
This hat is worked seamlessly from the bottom up. The ribbing and stitch pattern are worked with the outside side of the hat facing you, but then a short row is utilized so that the remainder of the hat, which is done in reverse stockinette, is worked with the inside of the hat facing you. In this way, more stitches are knitted than purled.
SIZES 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
For head circumference: 16 (18, 19, 20, 22, 24) inches/ 41 (46, 48, 51, 56, 61) cm
This hat fits snug and a little slouchy, coming in six sizes fitting small babies to large-headed adults. Choose a size that will give you with 4-6 inches (8-14 cm) of negative ease; that is, the difference between your smaller head measurement and the hat’s larger measurement at this point. Red sample shown in Adult M with 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) of negative ease.
The most fool-proof method is to measure a similar fitting hat that you or your intended wearer loves, and choose a finished size that matches.
