The carillon, the largest and heaviest of all musical instruments, consists of a series of 23 or more tuned bells, which are usually housed in a belfry or tower. The carillonneur plays these bells by using their fists to strike sticklike batons on a keyboard, sometimes using their feet on a pedal keyboard for the heavier bells. The largest carillon bell in the world is the bourdon (or heaviest) bell of the Rockefeller carillon in Riverside Church, New York City. The largest tuned bell ever cast, it sounds a low C and weighs more than 40,000 pounds (20 tons) and is 10 feet, 2 inches (3.01 m) in diameter. The keyboard is connected directly to the bell clappers via levers and wires. Skill level: This a relatively quick and easy pattern. The skills you need are knit, purl, increases, decreases, and following a stitch pattern. A short tutorial on adding beads is included. The stitch pattern is provided in both charted and written form, and instructions are given for all three lengths. All three lengths are shown in size S.
