Visserstruien zijn een eindeloze bron voor het ontwerpen van sokken. Dit jaar was ik voor de tweede keer op de tentoonstelling Propagansey in Noord-Yorkshire. De tentoonstelling wordt elk jaar rondom de tweede zondag van September georganiseerd door Deb Gillanders die onvermoeibaar vecht voor het behoud van de visserstruien. De tentoonstelling wordt gehouden in een oude kerk, Old Stephen’s Church, en alle truien hangen heel toegankelijk uitgestald over de kerkbanken. Een van de truien op bovenstaande foto, is de inspiratiebron voor de samenbreisok van de maand November.
Deze sokken zijn ontworpen voor mijn dochter met schoenmaat 42, maar zoals altijd kunnen sokken die op visserstruien gebaseerd zijn makkelijk aangepast worden aan andere maten. Een proeflapje van de wol die je wilt gebruiken is daarvoor wel heel belangrijk.

Fisherman’s ganseys are an endless source of inspiration for designing socks. In September 2015 I visited Propagansey in Northern Yorkshire. This particular gansey exhibition is organised each year in September by local Deb Gillanders. She’s constantly trying to keep the gansey and the knowledge about ganseys alive. The exhibition is in an old church, Old Stephen’s Church, and all ganseys are draped on the pews. You can touch them, feel them, smell them and look at them as long as you like. One of those ganseys, a pink one, knitted by a local woman from Whitby, named Carol, gave me the inspiration for these socks. She knitted a pink gansey, because she wanted it to be feminine and for herself. The flags represent the fact she lives in Whitby, the plaits because she had long hair up to the age of 24. And the hearts are in the pattern just because she likes them.
The sock pattern is built on a plait, the flags and the hearts repeating every 37 stitches. The plait is knitted over 6 stitches every 4 rounds and there are 2 purled stitches on both sides.
The pattern figured as pattern of the month in a Dutch Ravelry group, Sokkenbreien, in November 2015. They were designed for my daughter, size 42, but as always socks based on ganseys can easily be adjusted to other sizes. Knitting a swatch can certainly prove to be helpful!
