Carolyn's Choice
When I first learned to knit socks, many years ago, I used the traditional heel-flap-and-gusset method for the heel and worked them top down. Then I progressed to toe-up socks, using Judy’s Magic Cast-On, and moved on to the short-row heel method, which I preferred since it more closely resembled the look of a heel on commercial socks. However, a few years ago, my knitting friend Carolyn—an avid sock knitter—introduced me to her favorite choice of heel construction: the Fleegle heel. I liked this easy method of knitting the heel, as well as the fit. So this is my tribute (and thank you) to Carolyn. See accompanying article on the Fleegle Heel. I also like the neat appearance (and stretchiness!) of the tubular bind off for toe-up socks although it’s more time-consuming. As an alternative, I’ve provided instructions and a link to a video for the faster and simpler Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off.
