I’ve been in search of the perfect, modern fisherman’s style sweater for some time. There are of course hundreds of versions available, but oddly it was hard to find one that had every element I was looking for (perhaps simply because there are so many!)
What I desired the most was braids (or plaits) with three crossing sections, rather than just the 2 sections in a cable. In pursuit of a wearable, modernized version I didn’t want an overload of braids either; rather, a pared down aesthetic involving less embellishment, primarily on the sleeves. I also wanted a neckline that was a hybrid between a crew neck and a funnel neck. Lastly - and quite importantly as a knitter - I really, really wanted it to be constructed from the top down so it would be easy to customize the length and fit of the body and sleeves.
So, this is my version. It may get lost among the many other fish in the sea, but if you decide to try it, I hope you enjoy it!
It is knit seamlessly from the top down. Short rows are used to shape the neckline. Detailed instructions are given for setting up all of the stitch patterns, however, because there are several things happening at once, it is recommended for a knitter with some experience.
Intended to fit with approx. 2 - 10 cm (1 - 4 inches) of positive ease at the bust. Shown here in Size M1 with approx. 12 cm (5 inches) of positive ease. The sample was knit in De Rerum Natura Gilliatt, colour ‘Baleine Bleue’.
