Cavalchina is a simple tip to tip shawl worked in a light and airy fiber. The fluttery, undulating lace pattern along the edge is the star here, and it adds an undeniably modern and delicate vibe to the shawl. I find it hard to design a piece that’s both simple and unique, but the almost “layered” look of this lace edging stood out to me as something I really had not seen before and I kind of loved knitting it up.
It’s a fun little motif, with a few hidden stitches you may not expect in there, but I promise it’s easy to memorize and work.
Named for a delicious bottle of pale pink wine that you can sip on a patio while the sun sets, my Cavalchina shawl feels like late July to me. The actual bottle of wine is Cavalchina 2023 Rose, in case you’re wondering - and it’s about $20 for a bottle.
Simple garter stitch at center keeps the focus on the lace, makes for a stretch of easy knitting on each row, and allows for worry-free modifications to your final size.
Skydance Fibers Nova yarn is a light and airy blend of linen, silk, alpaca, and merino. The alpaca and merino add softness, while the linen and silk give the fabric a subtle touch of rustic texture.
Cavalchina is knit lengthwise, from tip to tip. The shawl is shaped in the garter section with increases from first tip to the center, and decreases from the center back down to the final tip.
Notes are in the pattern on modifications to size.
Written and charted instructions for lace pattern are included.
Pattern as shown requires one skein of Nova yarn. If substituting, you need 400yds/384m of a soft, round fingering weight fiber for the size shown here.
My sample is knit in Nova’s Shade 37, Here is a Shell For You.
