When I saw the deceptively simple tilework in a courtyard at the the Palace of Versailles, I knew I had to knit it. It makes for lovely, easy-to-knit, but striking colorwork. A small band of garter stitch at the beginning and end of the piece prevents curling.

I can never get garter stitch to behave well in the round (and who wants ALL of that purling?) So, the garter stitch is worked back-and-forth. The seams are only one inch long on each end of the cowl, so they’re not too terrible. The rest of the piece is knit entirely in the round.
