Chopped
Chopped. A pair of mittens designed for and inspired by my woodworking father, with a cable detail running down the back of the hand. These mittens are knit in the round, with a long, ribbed cuff and purl ridges for extra warmth. The details in the ribbing and cables look as if they are carved from wood.
These mittens would be a great gift! They knit up very quickly and take less than one skein of yarn!
This pattern is both charted and written, for your convenience.
Size: The pattern lists one size for men, to fit a 10” circumference hand (measured around the palm), 7 3/4” hand length (measured from longest finger tip to bottom of palm), with a 3 1/2” cuff. Sizing for women and children coming soon.
Needles: US 8/5mm 40” circular needle for Magic Loop method or DPN’s, whichever method you prefer for knitting in the round.
Yarn: This pattern calls for 165 yards of 100% worsted weight wool yarn. That is less than one skein of Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd’s Wool Worsted. This is a very light worsted weight wool, so please keep that in mind when choosing yarn for this project and measuring your gauge.
Other tools needed: row counter, cable needle, waste yarn of a contrasting color, tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch marker for marking beginning of round.
Skills required: Knitting and purling, decreasing, knitting in the round, cable work, grafting.
Pattern includes links to video tutorials for casting on, grafting techniques, and picking up stitches from waste yarn, as well as a brief photo tutorial.
