Christmas Cowl
NOTE: you can use any yarn(s) you choose to get the look and dimensions you prefer. Full instructions given and I will be releasing an instruction video on YouTube
I was inspired to design this funky, fast, super chunky, festive freebie, optionally textured cowl by cooling conditions and because I hate having a cold neck. I even wear it inside! I chose to use striking sunset colors for the slub yarn, they are my favorites. I absolutely love it, and everyone comments on it whenever I wear it. It’s all about synergy and happy random combinations.
Importantly, it’s an affordable, machine washable classic. I bought a mass of slub yarn in discontinued colors and paired it with an easy-care merino mix in super chunky and double stranded double knit. Its kinda easy-peasy but eye catching. The combination of colors and even the stitch pattern is up to you. You can choose bright colours, with the quirky texture Or you can make it a more everyday item, that matches everything, in a different shade. You can also decide on the fit, by altering the width and circumference you knit, you can twist it before joining to make it a mobius cowl, or not. If you like, make a scarf and don’t join it at all. As with everything I design, “MAKE IT YOUR OWN!”
This super quick knit is a top beginner garment, with instruction videos. This design is for absolutely everyone. It suits all budgets and ability levels. You can start with an easy cast-on or a more complex provisional cast-on. This cowl is worked in seed/moss stitch (shown here). Alternative reversible stitches are garter stitch or rib stitches. Knit it until it’s the size you want then join it with a seam or 3-needle bind-off to make a cowl.
This pattern gives you lots of options to build skills. I’ve used a provisional cast-on with a 3-needle bind-off at the join, I don’t like seaming. You can use a traditional cast-on and whichever seaming method if you prefer.
Note: When choosing sizes please be aware that the cowl is twisted through 180 degrees before joining to form a mobius cowl. If you don’t twist it, you can make it shorter. Please choose the dimensions based on your preference with reference to the appendix, at the end, which discusses gauge and swatching.
Make to your own size and yarn preference.
The example shown used about 145 yd/ 130 m of the Schachenmayr Merino Super Big Mix yarn held triple with 2 strands of the King Cole Opium. Schachenmayr Merino Super Big Mix has been discontinued but is still available online or you can buy the substitutes named. I have these specific discontinued shades of Opium which you can buy at cost from me (£2.50 per skein plus p&p) - please message me for details. Or they are available to buy online (in bulk or at a higher cost).
