This colorwork/stranded knitting cowl is worked in the round from the bottom to the top edge. The cowl features bands of stylized sheep and geometric motifs inspired by woven Navajo rugs.

You will need approximately 235 yards of colors A, B, C and 118 yards of color D to knit the cowl as written. The sample is shown in Musket (light gray), Emsket (dark gray), Fawn (light brown), and Moorit (dark brown).

Inspired by the wonderful natural wool colors of the Churro sheep, which are an important part of Navajo culture here in the Southwestern US. They are a hardy breed, able to withstand the arid conditions in the area, as well as being a multipurpose breed. The natural wool colors can be found in the work of many local Navajo weavers in this area.
