Even though Outlander is loaded with hand knitted items, I challenged myself to come up with a design that translated a non-knitted item from the show into knitted form. The idea for these socks came from the the pin worn by the men in the MacKenzie clan, engraved with the motto “Luceo non uro” (meaning: I shine not burn). The medallion cable stitch is suitable for both men and women, and the extra long cuff looks great peeking over a pair of boots for everyone to see! The 8 stitch/8 round stitch pattern is easy to memorize and the simple 1 over 2 cables are easy to execute. Knit top down, the cuff of the sock has subtle shaping achieved by casting on with larger needles and performing a series of 4 decrease rounds. The reinforced stockinette heel flap and French heel turn are in keeping with the techniques of the mid 1700s. While I chose a silvery grey yarn to mimic the metal of the pin, you can choose a color that speaks to you. Knit a pair for everyone in your clan, perhaps with the motto “non otio” (meaning: no idle hands)!
