Claret
Claret is a deeply textured, cabled sweater featuring cables in diagonal lines. At both hem and wrist, the cable motif emerges from the cast on rib in beautiful V-shaped sections, which are then worked upwards to create a deeply striking fabric.
The center cable on the front of the sweater opens up to create a clean edge for the deep V-neck, and this edge is brought around the shoulders and back neckline for a beautifully finished look around the collar.
Claret’s sleeves echo the body with a single panel of the cables, and the back of the sweater provides some contrast, using a simpler version of the chart - and some less involved knitting!
Claret is worked in Green Mountain Spinnery’s Mountain Mohair yarn, a gorgeous worsted weight tweed wool with just a touch of mohair. The colors available are gorgeous, and this yarn really makes a cable pop. The subtlest of halos keeps the look of the fabric soft, but the flecks of color add depth and interest and the stitch definition is wonderful.
Sample is knit in the Claret colorway of Mountain Mohair.
As always with my sweaters, Claret is designed so you can personalize the fit if needed. Along the sides of the body and under arms, sections are worked in reverse stockinette to allow for easy modifications in circumference around body or sleeve, and notes are also in pattern for lengthening body, sleeves, or armholes as desired.
Claret is worked from the bottom up in pieces and seamed. Seams are straight and simple, and sweater is designed with garter edge stitches to make the assembly hassle free.
All cables are both charted and written.
Yardage by Size is listed below:
Sizes
39(43,47,51,55)(59,63,67,71)”
99(109.25,119.5,129.5,139.75)(150,160,170.25,180.25)cm
Sizes reflect circumference around body and bust. Sample is shown worn with 6”/15.25cm positive ease at bust. If you are between sizes, I suggest choosing the smaller of the two and adding width and length as needed. I like the fit of this with between 5-7”/12.75-17.75cm of positive ease.
Yarn Quantities
1100(1200,1350,1450,1550)(1650,1700,1750,1800)yds
1005(1100,1235,1325,1420)(1510,1555,1600,1645)meters
Note that the above quantities reflect the somewhat cropped silhouette shown. If modifying pattern or using substitute yarn, adjust your quantities as needed.
ERRATA: In the size specific chart instructions on pgs 7, 8, and 12, the smallest size was listed as a 37, instead of a 39. This typo has been changed, and it now says 39 in the PDF available.
